I'm excited to share this series with you, called "101 Blogging Tips". In the series there will be 101 blogging tips that you can begin applying to your blog today! Don't wait, get started now!
Tip #91: Monetization - How And What to Sell
First, let me stress you do not want to continuously self-promote your services or products, however, you can still make money and your blog can be your biggest marketing tool (especially if you follow these 101 Blogging Tips!).
Selling Your Services and Products
You actually do this naturally when you blog. When you share what you love and write about what you do, why you do it, how you do it, people learn more about you, you earn trust, and ultimately your followers become your customers.
To help them quickly access your services and products when they're ready, you want to add a Products/Services item to your navigation bar, and/or have promo buttons in your sidebar to highlight featured products for example.
Occasionally (following the 90-10 rule), you can add bold calls-to-action in your posts and directly promote a given or set of services or products.
You can and should be an affiliate of similar products or service you trust and enjoy, and make a little (or a lot) of money by promoting them. However, this should be subtle and you need to disclose you are an affiliate. I recommend putting buttons in your sidebar for these types of badges. For example, I am an affiliate of BlueHost and HostGator although I do have my own WordPress hosting as well.
Sponsored Ads and Banners
BlogHer is a big source and a well-known brand, however, you have to have a certain amount of traffic to your site, be blogging a certain amount of time, and post consistently before you can gain sponsors. But keep blogging, keep practicing good SEO techniques. Use analytics and keep a diary of your social network reach so you can use it and submit to sites, like BlogHer, in effort to gain sponsorship. It's also just a great tool for you to know your stats, use it for marketing efforts, and to better know your audience and when they read, what they click on, etc. All good stuff.
